The Bulwark

His partner knows they can count on him.

StableReliableDefensive

The Bulwark is the one who never plays the match of his life and never plays the disaster. Thirty matches in a row at the same level. If that sounds unimpressive, try finding somebody else who can do it.

How they play

Solid to the point of dullness, in the best sense. He covers his half of the court and a slice of his partner's without making a noise, doesn't attempt shots beyond his range, and never drifts out of the right position. He has a quality technical players undervalue: whatever arrives on his side goes back to the other. Not spectacular, simply inevitable.

Strengths

Reliability as a tactical asset. His partner can gamble, come in, invent — because they know there's a net behind them. That changes the match completely for whoever plays with him: pairings with a Bulwark attack more, because missing costs less.

The weak side

Invisibility. The Bulwark rarely decides a match, and on court he can end up absorbing too much if nobody takes the initiative. Under pressure he tends to drop back further rather than step forward, and against a pairing that's very aggressive at the net he can spend a whole set defending without ever turning the momentum.

The ideal partner

Works best with The Artist. It's the classic case of opposites completing each other: one invents without fear because the other holds, and the other holds happily because somebody is finally closing the points.

"You go, I've got the back."
