The Showman

Every point is an act.

ShowmanFunExpressive

The Showman commentates. He commentates his points, he commentates yours, he commentates the wind, he commentates the fact that he's commentating. And the remarkable thing is that the court is more fun with him on it — opponents included.

How they play

Theatrical but not fake. He celebrates, he despairs, he mocks himself after an error and retrieves an impossible ball with rather more diving than the situation required. Underneath the staging there is a real player, though: The Showman usually has excellent hands and a feel for the moment, because he knows exactly when a point matters and lifts his level right there.

Strengths

Control of the atmosphere. With him on court the tension never accumulates: if his pairing is losing badly, one joke puts everybody back in the match. He also destabilises — serious opponents get irritated, and irritated players start missing.

The weak side

The blackout. When the show isn't landing — cold crowd, a partner not playing along, opponents who won't react — The Showman runs out of fuel and his level drops with his mood. And every so often the performance eats the concentration on precisely the point that counted.

The ideal partner

Works best with The Philosopher. It's a contrast that looks impossible and holds up beautifully: one ignites, the other stabilises. With another Showman the match becomes a variety act with negligible sporting consequences.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I dedicate this point to myself."
