His presence alone is worth a point.
There are players who win points and players who change matches. The Catalyst is the second kind: his contribution doesn't show in the statistics, it shows on his partner's face after the first "come on, we're right here".
High tempo, high volume. He's constantly moving, he encourages after every point — won or lost — and plays visibly better when the pairing is working. Technically he's a solid player without being spectacular, but his real shot is something else: he knows exactly when to say the right thing to pick up a partner who was starting to go.
Comebacks. Teams with a Catalyst on court rarely lose the matches that are decided in the head, the ones where you go a break down and normally let go. He's the player who looks up rather than down at the worst moment, and that gesture on its own keeps the pairing alive.
Dependence on the climate. If his partner doesn't answer the energy, The Catalyst empties out fast and can go from engine to dead weight inside two games. And with the wrong partner, the constant encouragement is felt as pressure rather than support.
Works best with The Sphinx. He brings the voice she doesn't need but the pairing does, and she brings the coldness he lacks in the finishes. One ignites, the other closes.
"Point gone, new point. Let's go."
