The Coach

His win is you getting better.

DidacticExpertLeader

The Coach has worked out something the rest miss: winning is good, but watching your partner nail the shot you explained last week is better. The problem is that sometimes he explains it during the point.

How they play

Technically clean, almost textbook. His shots look like they came out of a manual because largely they did: short preparation, composed body, nothing surplus. He doesn't play to impress, he plays to demonstrate that the right way works. And it does: he beats people who hit far harder than he does, simply because he misses less and is always in the correct place.

Strengths

He raises everyone around him. On court with a beginner, that beginner plays their best match. He reads other people's errors in real time and can explain them in one sentence, without jargon. He's the player everybody wants as a partner the first time out.

The weak side

Timing. The right piece of advice delivered at 5-5 in the third becomes the wrong piece of advice, and a partner under pressure hears it as criticism. The Coach also struggles to switch the analysis off and play on instinct: sometimes he's thinking about how the shot should be hit while he's hitting it.

The ideal partner

Works best with The Potential. It's the one pairing where teaching isn't a burden but the engine: one has everything to say, the other everything to absorb, and the improvement shows week by week.

"Here, let me show you in slow motion."
